Pavel Pernica a.k.a Parak or Steam Rax, was born on February 11, 1959 in Moravska Trebova, Czech Republic. In 1962, his family moved to Brno, where they lived until 1979. At eleven, Pavel took up his first musical instrument-the drums. With his classmates he started his first band, whose repertoire included cover versions of English and American rock bands. In 1974, after graduating highschool he created his second band, with who he began performing in a basement of an old house. At first it was for an exclusive group of friends, but soon this space was turned into an illegal club called Atelier This was one of the first underground clubs in Brno. Project “Atelier” endured for over a year.
In 1979, Steam Rax attempted his fourth escape from Communist Czechoslovakia and he succeeded. The first half of the year, he spent in an Austrian refugee camp, and the second half of the year, prior to immigrating to the USA, he lived in a small town in Germany and in Paris, France. Then, in 1980, he finally arrived in the USA. After spending the first 10 days in New York, he went on to LA to live with his old Czech friends. There he began singing and experimenting with the bass guitar. About a year later, he moved to Seattle, where he purchased his first bass guitar and started to look around for band mates. Following unsuccessful attempts to form a band, Steam Rax moved to Florida, but then shortly later to NYC, a city which he immediately felt would be his new home. A year later, within New York’s Czech community, he found his new band members. This hard-core punk rock band, “The Iron Curtain” included also an American guitar player Steve Benko, who later appeared in the punk rock band of New York’s underground led by Lidia Lunch. Band lasted from about 1985 to 1987, during which time the group played in New York’s famous clubs: CBGB’s, The Spiral, Pyramid, etc. Even Georgio Giomelsky, the former manager of the “Rolling Stones”, showed interest in the group. The repertoire was made up of mostly their own material. Songs are saved on analogue recordings and are considered for CD release.
In 1989, Steam Rax met Karel Jancak, the former solo guitarist from the group Pulnoc (Plastic People of the Universe). They formed together new band “Out of Line”. This band included musicians from Brno, former signer from “Iron Curtain”, Julius Haak and a drummer, Alex Hlousek, from the former czech band “Courageous Little Beavers”. The music was influenced by the new guitarist who slowed down the fast punk genre, individualized and emphasized it with his heavy-metal alternative guitar. Group appeared in New York’s clubs until 1992, and the band’s work is saved on studio analogue recordings. Then in 1993-1995, after leaving “Out of Line”, Steam Rax jammed in various New York studios with American and Czech musicians, such as Erno Sedivy, Jan Sucha (of Laura And Her Tigers), Petr Marek, and Ivan Miksovic. The first version of the songs “Revelation” and “Castel’s Stoker” were recorded.
Steam Rax devoted the next two years writing more songs, such as “Serve The Power”, “Triphenidill”, “Angel By My Side”, “To All My Friends”, which were recorded in NY in 1997, with the cooperation of the Czech guitar player Edy Salas. In 1999 and 2000, Steam
Rax continued composing more songs, most of which are included on the first CD “Aware-Steam Rax and Guest”. In 2001 and 2002 Steam Rax cooperated with Mark Levitas, another New York musician, with whom he recorded the first version of the songs “Stranded”, “Ma-ni-tu”, and “Make a Move Master Liberator”. From the year 2003 until recently, Steam Rax had worked with musicians from his hometown Brno (Tom Celechovsky, Pavel Cech, Jaroslav Skvarna, Julek Vaverka, Honza Cep and others), on the CD entitled “Aware”. The songs mentioned earlier which are not included on CD “Aware” are been prepared for the release on the next album due out in 2006-7.
Pavel Pernica alias Pařa a.k.a. Steam Rax, narozen 11.2.1959 v Moravské Třebové, Česká republika. V roce 1962 se s rodiči přestěhoval do Brna, kde žil až do roku 1979. Ve svých 14-ti letech začal hrát na svůj první hudební nástroj – bicí. Se spolužáky ze třídy založil první skupinu, jejíž repertoár tvořili převzaté skladby anglických rockových skupin. S druhou skupinou která následovala ukončení devítiletky v roce 1974, došlo i na vystupování pro úzký okruh přátel v prádelně jednoho starého domu. Byl to jeden z prvních undergroundových klubů v Brně, i s barem, zvaný „Ateliér“. Celý projekt trval asi rok.
V roce 1979 utekl Pařa na čtvrtý pokus ze socialistického Československa. Prvního půl roku prožil v utečeneckém táboře v Rakousku a druhého půl roku před odjezdem do Spojených států prožil v Německu a Paříži. Po příjezdu do New Yorku, kde strávil asi deset dní, se přesunul do Los Angeles ke svým českým přátelům. Tam se začal věnovat zpěvu a basové kytaře. Asi po roce se přestěhoval do Seattlu, kde začal shánět nové spoluhráče. Po půlročním nezdárném hledání odjel na Floridu a záhy do New York City, města ke kterému cítil, že bude jeho novým domovem. Po roce potkal v české menšině mladých emigrantů své nové spoluhráče. V nové skupině „Iron Curtain“, hrál i americký kytarista Steve Benko, který později vynikl v punkrockové skupině newyorského undergroundu, kterou vedla Lidia Lunch. Projekt „Iron Curtain“ trval od 1985 do 1987, kdy skupina hrála v newyorských klubech, CBGB’s, Spiral, Pyramid, atd. O skupinu projevil zájem i Georgio Giomelsky, původní manažer „Rolling Stones“. Repertoár tvořili hlavně vlastní skladby. Záznamy skladeb jsou uchovány pouze na kazetách a uvažuje se o reedici na CD.
V roce 1989 potkal v New Yorku tehdejšího sólového kytaristu, ze skupiny „Půlnoc“ (Plastic People of The Universe), Karla Jančáka, se kterým založili novou skupinu „Out of Line“. V této skupině hráli brněnští hudebníci, původní zpěvák z „Iron Curtain“ Julius Haak a bubeník Aleš Hloušek, ex „Odvážní Bobříci“. Skupina následovala hudební cestu bývalé „Iron Curtain“ a hrála v klubech newyorského undergroundu. Hudba byla ovlivněna také novým kytaristou, který rychlý punkový žánr zpomalil, zosobnil a zvýraznil jeho těžkou metalově-undergroundovou alternativní kytarou. Skupina působila do roku 1992 a její tvorba je zaznamenána stejně jako „Iron Curtain“ na studiových analogových záznamech. Po odchodu z „Out of Line“, v letech 93-95, Steam Rax jamoval v různých newyorských studiích s americkými i českými hudebníky, mimo jiné i s Ernem Šedivým, Janem Šůchou (Laura a její tygři), Petrem Markem, Ivanem Mikšovičem, atd. V těchto letech byly nahrány také první verze skladeb „Revelation“ a „Castel’s Stoker“.
Další dva roky se věnoval psaním nových skladeb, například: „Serve The Power“, „Triphenidill“, „Angel By My Side“, „To All My Friends“, které byly v New Yorku v roce 1998 poprvé natočeny ve spolupráci s českým kytaristou Edy Salasem. V roce 1999 a 2000 se převážně věnoval psaním dalších skladeb a většina z nich je uvedena na prvním řadovém CD „Aware – Steam Rax & guests“. V roce 2001 a 2002 spolupracoval s newyorským hudebníkem Markem Levitasem se kterým natočil první verze skladeb „Stranded“, „Ma-ni-tu“, „Make a Move Master Liberator“. Od roku 2003 do současné doby spolupracuje s brněnskými hudebníky (Tom Čelechovský, Pavel Čech, Jaroslav Škvarna, Julek Vaverka, Honza Čep a další), kteří se také podíleli na natáčení výše uvedeného CD „Avare“. Skladby zmíněné v předešlých řádcích se připravují pro vydání druhého CD na rok 2006-7.
